The Diabetes Leadership Council & Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition Applaud the Supreme Court’s Decision to Uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

WASHINGTON - The Diabetes Leadership Council  and Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition, the diabetes and health care reform advocacy organizations advancing patient first policies at the local, state and federal levels, welcome today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability driving $3.8 trillion in health care costs annually.

People with diabetes cannot manage the condition affordably or effectively without comprehensive health care coverage. Now that the Supreme Court has determined the ACA will be a part of our nation’s health care future, alongside Medicare and Medicaid, it is time to strengthen protections for all patients.

President Biden, Secretary Becerra, members of Congress and, importantly, other patient advocates – let’s get to work on the patient-centered reforms laid out in the Consensus Statement on U.S. Health Care Reform for People with Diabetes:

  • First dollar, preventive coverage for diabetes and other chronic disease management
  • Rebate reform to reduce prescription drug costs for patients
  • Strengthening the nation's public health safety net so no person with diabetes is ever again forced to ration insulin they need to survive
