UnitedHealthcare to restrict pump access for children with T1D

DLC, Children with Diabetes and the Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition call on UnitedHealthcare to reverse its decision to expand durable insulin pump access restrictions to include children with T1D.DLC opposed this controversial policy when UHC first restricted pump access for adults with diabetes. We believe:

  • People with diabetes and their medical teams know best which pump system meets their needs
  • Disrupting access to prescribed diabetes tools and technology may compromise safety
  • UHC should disclose the health and economic impacts of its current insulin pump policy for adults before extending it to children with diabetes

Patients and their health care providers should share the decision of which insulin pump system to prescribe based on the individual's needs and criteria. A commercial contract should not be a limiting factor in this intensely personal health care decision.
